‘Hummingbird’ is a collection of original and traditional folk songs. I’ve wanted to make this record for such a long time, so in March I returned to Sam Lakeman’s Somerset studio, two years since recording ‘Headlong’ in that same place. Sam put up some beautiful microphones and we dug into these songs, some of which I have performed hundreds of times, but never committed to tape. I invited my good friends Cara Dillon, John McCusker and Ben Nicholls to join me. The result is my most stripped-back album yet.
I decided to set up my new label, Commoner Records, and have joined with Thirty Tigers in Nashville (Jason Isbell, John Prine) who will be working the record on my behalf. It feels good to take on some new partners. They saw me perform at the Folk Alliance in Kansas City earlier this year and offered me a deal on the spot. They’re really good people, so I’m in safe hands.
The album release tour dates are below, I hope I’ll see you out there!
All the best as ever,
